    EIGHT RUSSIAN FOLKSONGS Op.58

by Anatol Lyadov   £30.00

Transcribed for brass band by Chris North.

The Russian composer Anatoly Lyadov (1855-1914) was notorious for his drunkenness and laziness. It took him 13 years to compose the orchestral miniature Baba Yaga. And he was too slothful to accept the commission for a Firebird ballet offered him by Sergei Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes so the great impresario offered it to Stravinsky instead. Yet, Lyadov taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory where his students included Prokofiev and Myaskovsky. And he left behind a small body of memorable works remarkable for their colour, charm, mastery of form and counterpoint, and evocation of the magical world of fairytales. His Eight Russian Folksongs date from 1906. Each movement is fairly short (the whole eight movements only last around 12 minutes) and the style of the work is typical of the Russian Nationalist school of composition.

1. Religious Chant, 2. Christmas Carol, 3. Plainte, 4. Humorous Song, 5. Legend of the Birds, 6. Cradle Song, 7. Dancing Song, 8. Dancing Chorus.
