Chris North began to learn the cornet at the age of 12. On leaving school chose a career in Army music. Chris studied at Kneller Hall, where he was privileged to receive tuition from the great Jack Mackintosh and John Wilbraham. On graduation Chris became the Bandmaster of The Duke of Wellington's Regiment before leaving the Army in 1993, when he embarked on a new career as a teacher. Chris has been involved with brass bands over many years as player, conductor, arranger and composer. Associations include the GUS Band, Bedford Town Band and the famous Foden's Band. Chris was also Musical Director of St Austell Youth Band 1998-2000 and Senior Tutor of Cornwall Youth Brass Band 1999-2000. Chris has had works published by Bernaerts, Wright & Round and Music Masters. In October 2002 Chris formed his own publishing business, Danetre Music, with the aim of producing quality arrangements, compositions and fun training music. On Remembrance Sunday 14 November 2004 the Normandy Veterans Association March, written by Chris whilst at Kneller Hall, was played at The Cenotaph and was listened to by millions all over the world on BBC TV and Radio. In April 2006 Chris fulfilled a long term ambition by releasing his own solo CD called Chris North & Friends. Chris has recently retired from teaching, the last seven years of which being as a peripatetic teacher for Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Service. Nowadays Chris prefers to play, and is the principal cornet of Daventry Brass. |
