Chris North

BA(Hons), PGCE, DipMus, FLCM, LTCL, LLCM(TD), BBCM, AMusLCM

Chris North began to learn the cornet at the age of 12 in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. On leaving school Chris chose a career in Army music and studied at Kneller Hall, where he was privileged to receive tuition from the great Jack Macintosh and later John Wilbraham. Chris went on to become the Bandmaster of The Duke of Wellington's Regiment before leaving the Army in 1993 to become a secondary school teacher.

Chris has been involved with brass bands over many years as a player, conductor, arranger and composer. Associations as player over the years include the Ransome Band and Bedford Town Band on flugelhorn, and the GUS Band, Bodmin Town Band and more recently the Foden's Richardson Band on cornet. In addition to playing cornet for Foden’s, Chris was also their Arranger in Residence.

He was also Musical Director of St Austell Youth Band 1998-2000 and Senior Tutor of Cornwall Youth Brass Band 1999-2000.

As an arranger and composer Chris has had works published by a number of publishers, including Bernaerts, Wright & Round and Perfect Pitch Publications.

In October 2002 Chris formed his own publishing business Danetre Music, with the aim of producing quality arrangements and compositions for brass band, and also fun music for training and beginners groups.

On Remembrance Sunday 14 November 2004 his Normandy Veterans Association March written by Chris when a Student Bandmaster at Kneller Hall, was played at The Cenotaph and was listened to by millions all over the world on BBC TV and Radio.

In April 2006 Chris fulfilled a long term ambition by releasing his own solo CD called Chris North & Friends, which features a selection of flugelhorn solos with both brass band and jazz trio backing.

Chris works as a peripatetic teacher for Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Service, and he is also a Member of the National Association of Brass Band Conductors.
